17-Year-Old Jiu-Jitsu Academy Owner: Coach Felicity on Teaching Kids, Mentorship & Competition

full interview podcast Sep 04, 2026

Host Pete Deeley welcomes Coach Felicity, who recently opened her own jiu-jitsu academy at age 17 (turning 18 shortly after). Felicity shares that after trying many sports, jiu-jitsu stuck because she loved teaching kids, beginning to coach at 15 and dreaming since age 12 of owning an academy. She credits mentor Professor Jose Salinas for encouragement, opportunity, and life lessons about perseverance. Felicity explains her kids’ program for ages 2–12, starting with body mechanics and games, using questions and intentional mistakes to build understanding, communication, and confidence. She discusses how she decides when students are ready to compete by tracking progress over months, and recalls a memorable match where an opponent lifted her while she held a triangle. She describes a shy student who grew to love training and wants to coach. Felicity is “Strawberry Superwoman” to a student, and can be found on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook as Felicity Faith Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
