Aaron Jannetti | The Jiu Jitsu Mindset Podcast

full interview podcast Nov 10, 2023

Aaron Jannetti is a three-stripe brown belt, a gym owner in Columbus, Ohio, and a self-defense instructor whose teaching covers knives and firearms alongside jiu-jitsu, Krav Maga and kickboxing. With Pete and Professor Lucas Rubbo, he explains why "stress is stress" whether a young purple belt is hunting you at open mat or someone pulls a gun, and why exposing students to that stress slowly and safely is what improves their decisions. He walks through the level system his school uses, and tells how an angry college kid who had to drop out of Ohio State for a quarter found an outlet in a Krav Maga gym.

Aaron argues that confidence comes less from the art than from the coach and culture delivering it, and that a great coach can both humble a young fighter and protect a 40-year-old hobbyist. He describes self-defense as a lens rather than a style, warns that gun people, knife people and grapplers all lean too hard on what they know, and how real skill lets you choose your level of violence, including the confidence to walk away. Pete recalls a boy pulling a knife on him and his little sister when he was eight, and Aaron closes with a student who overcame old trauma triggers and stopped drinking and using drugs.
