Matt Arroyo | The Jiu Jitsu Mindset Podcast
Feb 16, 2024Professor Matt Arroyo, a former UFC fighter who runs a Tampa gym of 500 to 600 families, traces his drive back to his Uncle Jimmy. At 15 he had failed every ninth-grade class except gym, until a five-minute talk from his uncle sent him to every teacher to ask what it would take to graduate on time. He doubled up on grades, made the honor roll, and graduated with his class. At 20 the same uncle handed him Rich Dad Poor Dad, which turned a kid who hated reading into a lifelong student of mindset, health and business, all of which he now folds into his teaching.
Matt left college baseball for jiu-jitsu in 2003, decided as a blue belt that he would one day own a gym, and went on to The Ultimate Fighter and the UFC. He talks about growing his online following from 3,000 to 330,000 in six months, why he believes the world and the jiu-jitsu community are overwhelmingly good, and the year of monthly private lessons with Marcelo Garcia that ended with his black belt. Asked why he was so good, Marcelo laughed and said he simply loved it more than anyone. Matt closes with why kids should start early: self-defense has to live "in your body," not in your head.
