Robson Moura | The Jiu Jitsu Mindset Podcast
Sep 15, 2023Professor Robson Moura, a multiple-time IBJJF black belt world champion and Hall of Famer with 35 years on the mat, tells Pete and Professor Lucas Rubbo how jiu-jitsu found him as a skinny kid playing barefoot soccer in the street. He asked his dad if he could "do Bruce Lee," and a brown belt at his father's factory, who had become his dad's best friend after a tense first meeting, kept insisting the kids should train. Robson explains why he wouldn't change anything about his childhood, and how good people around him helped pull him "to the other side."
At 22, a quiet student who had sat on the bench watching classes for weeks told Robson that training had saved his life, and that was the moment he understood that jiu-jitsu is about far more than medals. He describes leaning on the same mindset during a frightening stretch before his twins were born, telling himself to tie his belt and go one more round. He also shares his morning routine of stretching, gratitude, self-talk and meditation, built around the idea of "connect yourself," and his hope that academies will share more and hold on less tightly as the sport grows.
