Sam Joseph | The Jiu Jitsu Mindset Podcast
Aug 02, 2024Professor Sam Joseph walked away from a career in telecom sales leadership to open his own academy, putting his life savings into a few thousand square feet with no students and building it into a true family business. With Pete hosting solo, Sam explains why jiu-jitsu teaches you to be "more like steel and less like iron," how the art shaped his faith and made him a better problem solver at work, and what it was like coming up in the hard, old-school training rooms after starting in 1998 at Alliance Atlanta and earning his later belts with the Yamasaki academy in Washington, D.C.
Sam makes the case that competition is "all benefits" when you're honest about your goals, explains why learning jiu-jitsu is like learning a new language, and talks about the rare trust that lets training partners take each other to the edge safely. He also tells the story of the night at purple belt when he planned to quit, until one comment from his coach turned him around and he won his division at the Pans the next year, and closes with a student who arrived frail after a serious head injury and went on to become an IBJJF champion.
