The Deal That Almost Ended His Career โ and the Jiu-Jitsu That Saved It | Professor Marty Herrick
Oct 20, 2026In 2017, weeks after closing the biggest deal of his career, Marty Herrick's company found a mistake, and a major bank threatened to sue. For three months the company president walked into his office twice a week to tell him he'd put them out of business. "I thought it was over. If I ran my hands through my hair, there'd be hair in my hands." He stayed calm, the way jiu-jitsu had taught him, and the same partner ended up signing a second deal worth two to three times the first.
With Pete and co-host Professor Lucas Rubbo, Marty talks about the black belts BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre wore to the cage, why nothing burns you out like jiu-jitsu, learning to control the voice in your head under pressure, why you can't have a long memory on the mat, the cohort of ten where only two are left, the spotlight that comes with a brown belt, why you grow the most when you're uncomfortable, and the rematch with the guy who beat him at purple belt.
Recorded in August 2022, when Marty was a brown belt. He has since earned his black belt: Professor Marty Herrick.
