Thinking Fast Thinking Slow in Jiu Jitsu

podcast topic episode Sep 09, 2023

Pete and Professor Lucas Rubbo compare how a beginner and an expert make decisions on the mat: when you are thinking, and when you are simply reacting. Lucas argues that the instincts that look effortless in competition are training instincts, built by preparing for each scenario until the body moves before you notice, and that someone who only reacts fast often cannot explain what they just did. His case for learning slowly comes with a driving analogy: nobody learns in a Formula One car at 200 miles an hour, and even Formula One drivers get there through endless hours in a simulator.

Teaching a move, they agree, demands a deeper mastery than doing it, and an older body that forces slow, methodical learning may make for a more thorough student in the long run. They talk about relearning familiar details during a visit from Felipe Pena, why masters like Ringo Starr and Muhammad Ali are recognized by how they handle the basics, and the order Lucas uses to build a technique: alone, then slow, then drilled, then against real reactions and timing. The episode closes with a push for older beginners to try a tournament, and a recent loss reframed as a lesson in vocabulary not yet learned.
